Wall Art Size and Placement Guide

Wall Art Size and Placement Guide

Wall art is a common choice for sprucing up home spaces, but the magic happens when you pick the right size, hang it at the perfect height, and choose the best way to display it.

Sometimes, all it takes to transform the look and feel of a room is a well-placed piece of art. When you know the perfect wall art sizes for your home, it’s easy to get it right. We've put together this complete guide to help you pick the right size when it comes to your artworks.

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned art collector, our comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about selecting the perfect size for your wall art.

Standard Wall Art Sizes

When you explore options for enhancing your space, you'll find a variety of wall art forms ranging from posters to prints, photos, and canvas paintings. Unlike prints or posters, canvas oil paintings offer a rich texture that can be seen and felt. The brushstrokes and the layering of paint add depth, making the artwork come alive on your wall. The unique quality of hand-painted canvas art ensures that no two pieces are exactly alike.

Choosing the right size wall art is crucial for any space. At KelorArt, our online gallery lets you tailor handcrafted oil paintings to your taste in size, color, and pattern.

Here's a handy wall art size chart with standard sizes you might find while browsing. Remember, art can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and don't forget that frames can add a few extra inches to the overall dimensions.

Ideal Height For Wall Artwork

The ideal height for hanging artwork is slightly above eye level, so when you look at it, your chin is slightly raised. The center of the painting should be about 140-150 cm (55-59 inches) from the floor, which is roughly eye level.

If you’re hanging two or more paintings together, treat them as one unit. Find the center of the group and use it to determine the hanging height.

If several paintings of the same size are stacked on top of each other, the center of the entire group should be at this height.

How to Choose the Right Size for Wall Art

Before purchasing wall art, the first step is to measure your wall's dimensions, including the length, width, and height. This is crucial for choosing the right size artwork. In addition to the space on the wall, consider where you plan to hang the art—whether it’s above a blank wall, a piece of furniture, or a fireplace. These factors will determine the size of artwork you need. Once you’ve mastered these simple tips, you’ll be able to easily select the perfect size for your wall art and enhance your home decor.

Art on Blank Walls

If you are hanging art on a blank wall, allocate 60% - 75% of the available wall space for your art. Let’s say, if your wall is 4 meters long, you have between 2.5 and 3 meters of visual space to fill horizontally. If your wall is three meters tall, you have between 1.8 and 2.25 m to fill vertically.

The ideal wall artwork size should range from 240x180 cm(94.5" x 70.9") to 300x225 cm(118.1" x 88.6")

If you are choosing a specific piece, a size around 250x200 cm(98.4" x 78.7") would be a great fit.

Wall Art Over Couches, Beds, and other Furniture

When hanging wall art above furniture like a couch, bed, or chest of drawers, think about the width of the furniture to keep things looking balanced. Typically, the width of the artwork should be between 1/2 and 2/3 the width of the furniture. For instance, if your sofa is 7 feet (84 inches) wide, you’ll want the artwork to be anywhere from 42 to 63 inches wide.

This rule holds true whether you’re using one big piece or a few smaller ones side by side. The total width of all the pieces should align with the furniture below.

Also, leave about 6 to 8 inches (10-20 cm) between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork to give everything a bit of breathing room.

In my opinion, when you have a clear reference, like the furniture, the size of the artwork should complement it. A good match between the two creates a more pleasing and cohesive look.

Artwork over Fireplaces

When hanging art over your fireplace, it tends to look great if it’s about as wide as the fireplace opening, no matter how big the mantel is.

Wall Art Placement Tips

To achieve the perfect wall art placement, follow our tips below:

  • Bigger is better. Opt for artwork that’s slightly larger than what you might initially think. A piece that's too small can make the room feel empty.
  • For rooms with low ceilings (below 8 feet), divide your wall into 4 parts and hang art in the third section from the bottom.
  • If you are hanging multiple pieces of different heights, make sure the middles line up.

Horizontal Paintings for Wide Spaces

White Textured Abstract Wall Art

If you have a large wall space above your sofa or dining area, consider a horizontal painting. Popular sizes like 36" x 24" (91 x 61 cm) or 48" x 36" (122 x 91 cm) are perfect because they match the length of most furniture pieces and help balance your room. These paintings enhance the spaciousness of your living area by extending the viewer's gaze across the room, making spaces feel larger and more inviting.

Not sure how to decorate a large wall? There are plenty of ways to fill a blank wall, beyond just hanging artwork.

Vertical Paintings to Accentuate Height

Geometric Abstract Canvas Wall Art

Vertical paintings are ideal for adding depth to narrow spaces like hallways or small corners. With popular sizes such as 24" x 36" (61 x 91 cm), these artworks draw the eye upward, making your ceilings appear higher and rooms feel more open and airy. They’re especially effective in areas where you want to add a touch of elegance without overwhelming the space.

Square Paintings for Versatility

Modern Abstract Wall Art

Square paintings are super versatile, perfect for any spot in your home or office. Popular sizes like 24 inches by 24 inches (61 x 61 cm) and 36 inches by 36 inches (91 x 91 cm) are just right for fitting in nicely without making things feel cramped.

Sets of 2 for Creating Harmony

Wall Art Minimalist Black and Beige

A set of two paintings often works well to frame a feature in your home, such as a fireplace or a bed. Using two 20" x 20" (51 x 51 cm) pieces can create a symmetrical look that enhances the overall balance of your room. These sets are particularly useful in larger rooms where you want to connect different parts of the decor smoothly.
